My last "best of summer" post this year. Winter is here!
****************************************
Another highlight of this summer was our trip to Hunting Island.
Half the fun is getting there, right? Neat things to see on the way:
Beautiful Beaufort, S.C.:
I love old abandoned buildings like this. What was it? Who lived or worked here? Was it a roadside business/shop/gas station/restaurant?
Little roadside prayer chapel:
A beautiful big storm blew through! The ocean stirred up and brought shells, the wind blew and the palm trees danced in the strong salty breezes.
The beach front maritime forest areas are beautiful to walk through or drive through. The pine trees are so so so tall! The dense vegetation is home to squirrels, deer, owls, hawks, raccoons, and other things I don't want to see or mention. LOl
Sun dappled trails....
There go the pelicans....
Entrance to the state park:
little bitty shark tooth!
Nice wooden boardwalks to hike: (plenty of gators underneath to see!)
The lighthouse:
132 Feet tall. Cost $102,000 to build. 167 steps to the top.
Hunting Island is about halfway between the port cities of Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Georgia, and in the old days the sailors used the lighthouse to avoid the sand bars and shoals in the shallow waters, and to gauge their distance between the two cities.
"OOOOOOOOOOO! MERMAID MONEY!!"
The original light could be seen 20 miles out to sea. Today, the flashing light can only be seen about five miles out.
"Looking for adventure!"
It was a wonderful place to visit!
Lovely photos! I agree with you. I love the natural places with not many people.

Hi Debbi. That is really a beautiful place and all your photos are excellent, but you had me at the very first one. I have always loved the dunes, grasses and the little wonky fence..Have a great weekend..Judy
ReplyDeleteBeaufort is a gem with lovely things to see and friendly people to meet. I did love my visit to Hunting Beach and your pictures remind me of our terrific vacation in July.
