We enjoyed a drive to Charleston last week
the fields of corn are growing rapidly! Those who planted early have already harvested.
Blue skies so pretty and that's Mt. Pleasant over to the right there and the sparkling blue Atlantic in the distance
The old St. Julian Devine chimneys on Charleston's East side. They are about 135 feet tall, considered unstable, and were scheduled for demolition, but so far they are historic and are still standing. Quite a few homes and apartments in the area were at risk if the towers tumbled. I think city officials and the Historic Foundation are trying to save and preserve them. Not sure, but I think they were built in the 1930s and were originally trash incinerators.
Every summer I like to see the big green plants on that upstairs piazza! They get tall! |
(book below)
Summer scenes in the City:
They've put in a new fun playground for kids underneath the big bridge:
"Hot town, summer in the city
back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head.
But at night, it's a different world,
Go out and find a girl,
Come on, come on and dance all night
despite the heat, it'll be alright.
In the summer, in the city."

the bright windowboxes are out! I love seeing what everybody puts out each spring and summer! Some do the same each year, but most plant brand new combinations each season Headed home: |
and a trip through the country isn't complete without a stop at a little diner!
I had an amazing fish sandwich and fries and Mr. Front Porch had corn bread, green beans, pulled pork, and macaroni and cheese.
Back home I discovered my newest baby morning glories are up!
roses are in bloom in Charleston |

and plenty of "pollinators" (above) are blooming profusely , LOL! we shall leave them for a short while, to help the bees and butterflies and dragonflies.
We have a large flock of dragonflies this summer, and we love to watch their swooping antics every evening at dusk. I read that each dragonfly can eat over 100 mosquitoes each day, so we are all for that!
So glad you stopped in to visit me and hope you are having a great week so far.
Remember the big Sturgeon full moon is tonight and also the Perseids Meteor shower---try to get out and take a look if you can.
I love those dragonflies! And a trip to the city brings so many beautiful sights! It's so HOT this summer but the flowers and weeds are growing like crazy! Take care and enjoy your day my friend!
ReplyDeletethere are not many things i enjoy more than i ride in the car, destination, unknown!! the food looks so good, we are lucky to have men who like to have fun with us and all the little things we like to do!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun trip this sunny day---all those whiz-by glimpses (I do hope that you passed at least ONE cornfield perpendicular to the road, in order to get the full effect of cross-eyed staring as the rows zoomed past like the comb-marks in a little boy's Sunday hair). OH, Summer in the CITTTTAAAY!!
ReplyDeleteThe flowers and everyone's porch-gardens are such a wishful sight, and stacked galleries of white palings are such quick flashes of rows, like the whole class got braces the Summer between Third and Fourth grade.
I love your tours, and am always glad you're up and about and out sending all your tours to us who don't travel much. We're recovering from almost a MONTH of chaos from having the entire 1959 house re-wired for safety, so I love to see your perambulations even more these dusty, cluttery days. I've spent more time trying to find out where to BE than being there lately, and am now getting a bit more grounded amongst the leftover what my Daddy called "DEE-BRISS" following such a storm of sheet-rock, sawdust, and attic flotsam descending upon our every inch. Lots of those hours have been spent right here, chronicling the days and aftermath of such destruction and mayhem left behind, and a little nudge to send out a couple of posts on LAWN TEA. I doubt the interest after such a long drought, but I'm hopeful to connect with some of our old friend group again. So glad to see that you have kept up your travelogues; they're my Golden Ticket lots of days, and I look forward to them.
I loved your trip to the city!! Such good photos of interesting things! Do you miss city like at all?
