Cold Winter walk

Today's Winter walk:

Callie has stretched out.................and is rolling in the sandy dirt! LOL

the ladies STILL have their coop decorated for Christmas, LOL!

I carried my embroidery pocketbook to church today. I really like it and the bright colors, but it doesn't hold too much

this is a sign that Spring is right around the corner!....RIGHT??! lol

Going back inside, I wanted to show y'all this book

It has so many neat pictures in it with interesting little stories of the items pictured:

pretty teacups and saucers

a treasured 1960s ensemble

baby clothes
a loaded charm bracelet

I just finished this book below [historical fiction] and it was so good! I loved it.

It's about the sinking of the luxury steamship Pulaski in 1838. I think over a hundred people died and maybe about 50 people survived the sinking. It was known as the "Titanic of the South and The Titanic of it's Time" [76 years before the 1912 sinking of the Titanic] and was found 180 years after the sinking disaster.

from Steamboat Disasters

The ship was trying to get from Savannah, Georgia, to up to Baltimore, and had many wealthy people on board, as well as travelling families, businessmen, slaves, and crew. The ship had stopped in Charleston to pick up more passengers before continuing on north, many to Saratoga Springs for vacation and to escape the oppressive heat of the southern summer.

Back then, the wealthy would pack up trunks of their clothes and belongings, including dishes and silverware, coins, and their servants and slaves, and go North for the summer.

After the explosion, Many people floated on wreckage for 3 or 4 days without food or water before they were rescued. Only four women survived. The ship broke in half as it sank.

They found the old ship about 30 miles off the North Carolina coast. Divers recovered so many neat pieces of history from the wreckage, including ladies pretty items like fancy hairpins and combs, china, keys, thimbles, jewelry, silverware, and many gold and silver coins, many from the 1700s.

A men's pocket watch was found and recovered, set to 11:05, when the ship's boiler probably exploded, and Patti weaves a wonderful story around that in her book. This type of pocket watch was a powerful status symbol of wealth in 1838.

the News and Observer
I started reading Patti's books back in the summer, I believe, and they've all been very good.

This book was so interesting and they have recovered the ships anchor, but not the ship's bell.

Hope these last few days of February are going well in your neck of the woods. Soon these winter skies will give way to Spring, and I am READY! LOL

Our Camellia bush has finally bloomed. So late, but at least she is blooming!

  1. OH, that book does sound interesting. I will have to see if our public library has it. I'd never heard of that story/ship sinking before. Very interesting. That charm bracelet sure is loaded! My goodness, it would be too heavy to wear! I have one that I started in high school, but I also stopped adding to it in high school. I never liked wearing it because it was noisy and in the way when I'd try to do things. LOL. I still have it, however. But it doesn't look anything like that! That book about the treasured items certainly looks interesting too. Your camellia is so pretty. I don't have any here, but our church parsonage has some and I took some pictures there the other day when at Bible Study. I will have to share them sometime, they were so huge! And you look wonderful! Love your winter coat and boots, etc., and your purse too! I have the smaller one you sent me that I now use for my cosmetic bag! I love it. Callie sure is a beautiful kitty! Wow!! Does she stay outside all the time? I think you said she was your barn cat. She is so pretty!!! Yes, I am ready for spring to get here and stay a while before it gets too hot. It would be nice to have a real spring for a change. Usually here in Florida we go from winter straight to summer. I love spring, so I hope it hangs around for a while. It's so good to see you here again. I've missed your posts. Hope you are all feeling much better these days. Love to you and all the gang...Tracie, AmyBelle, Tansy, hubby, Callie, etc.... (((hugs)))

  2. I'm so glad to hear from you. I always thought Camelias bloomed in January but I guess it might depend on the weather. I've missed you and hope you've been well. We have been well and enjoying the beautiful weather. I wish I could hike every day while it's nice but I am too worn out when I do! lol Hugs!
