Country walk and Thanksgiving

It's a beautiful day for a country walk, hope you'll join us!

the clouds are so pretty

TINY white fairy flowers beneath my boots

 and a slight nip in the Fall air (which will very soon be Winter!).....got my shawls out. I have a big collection of shawls, been collecting them for YEARS NOW. LOL

our butterfly bush is still blooming:

No geraniums right now, but they have buds as does my rosebush. And our white lilies are in full bloom again, they seem to have a  mind of their own, LOL. Last year they even bloomed in December.

We don't really get "Fall" here as traditional Fall, the trees don't "turn" and have all the bright foliage.

Just bits of colors scattered here and there

Not too many leaves that fall here, the good part is we don't have TO RAKE, lol

.....and a big bin of "punkins", fun to see this time of year!
They are quickly being replaced by Christmas merchandise, and there are fresh Christmas trees being sold. 
Our Thanksgiving was nice, and I've enjoyed reading about everybody else's.

I sure enjoyed a long walk and picking my own cotton! After it's harvested, I'm free to take some left-overs. 

The farmers had the bales all ready to go in November

Our church Thanksgiving banquet prior to Thanksgiving was delicious and so fun!

Pretty much a whole table for deviled eggs and salads

Lots of delicious smoked turkey, dressing, rolls, casseroles, beans, "taters", gravy,  so much good stuff!

Thanksgiving day at home was more of the same:

And we ate left-overs for quite a few days

The full moon has been so pretty this past week:

Fall and Thanksgiving are now past, and the Christmas season has arrived. The fluffy camellias are blooming!

And I know each year when I see these berries, Christmas is close:

the stores have put the egg nog out! Egg nog is one of those things you either love it hate it, I guess. Kind of like spinach, anchovies, mushrooms, brussels sprouts.....LOL

I love egg nog!

This was on a Sunday, so after church, a nap, and coffee, I settled in with some magazines and new catalogues which are now arriving daily, hoping for Christmas sales. Do y'all get alot of catalogues? I love to browse through them, even if I'm not ordering.

This was a page in one of them.....lots of the pretty doors in Charleston, I thought that was neat! I showed it to Mr. Front Porch, and he told me I've stood at and photographed pretty much every one of those doors, ha ha LOL.

I think I recognize all of these!

Thanksgiving is on the way and I send Merry Thanksgiving wishes to you and your loved ones!

 We've already shopped for our Thanksgiving supper and I can't wait to cook it, LOL.

Fall Times

This week was Veteran's Day

 

and last week we enjoyed the "trunk or treat" at our church:

cant really share any other pictures from it because it's other people's children, but we had a great turn out and lots of costumes and fun was had by all. 

The farmers have their winter crops going: kale, turnips, cabbage, broccoli, collard greens, and a few carrots.

This farmer was out tending to his peanut fields, turning them over so they dry out before harvesting. Very fun to watch, but very DUSTY. The air at first smelled like potatoes, then I decided it was just the smell of good Earth. LOL

I keep making pictures of my "last Old Maids".........thinking they are DONE for the year......and they keep surprising me! I came upon this batch the other day.

We enjoyed a Men's church Lowcountry Boil a couple of weeks ago. Mr. Front Porch brought me home a heaping plate..... It sure WAS GOOD!

And those weird shaped watermelons we found growing, it was finally time to cut them open.

Our ladies sure enjoyed the treat!

thrift store paintings

 Recent thrift store finds:

It's a pretty picture, and with the horse and buggy and flowers, it reminds me of a John Sloane painting, but it isn't.

I found this one too!

This painting is of "the Pink House" in Charleston. It was a house "of ill repute". LOL. It was a brothel, a tavern, and in later years, "decent" things like offices and an art gallery. LOL

Its a small pink house over on Chalmers Street in the French Quarter, and the best they can figure, it was built in the late 1600s. The street is cobblestone. We used to walk by it all the time. It was made of Bermuda stone which gave it the pink color, and there are many legends about sailors and pirates there.

Does anyone remember the old song "Brandy" by Looking Glass? About 1972 maybe?

This old tavern reminds me of the lyrics:

There's a port on the western bay

and it serves a hundred ships a day.

Lonely sailors pass the time away

and talk about their homes.

and there's a girl, in this harbor town,

and she works layin whiskey down.

They say "Brandy, fetch another round!"

She serves them  whiskey and wine.

The sailors say "Brandy, you're a fine girl,

yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea".

(and the story goes on about the sailor she is in love with, but he won't give up the sea for Brandy.)

Brandy wears a braided chain

made of finest silver from the north of Spain.

A locket, that bears the name

of a man that Brandy loved.

He came on a summer's day,

bringing gifts, from far away.

Brandy used to watch his eyes

when he told his sailor's story,

she could feel the ocean fall and rise,

she saw it's raging glory.

But he had always told the truth, Lord, he

was an honest man.

And Brandy does her best to understand.

At night when the bars close down,

Brand walks through a silent town,

and loves a man who's not around......

she still can hear him say

"Brandy you're a fine girl,

what a GOOD WIFE you would be...."

I still love that song!

I really don't know if these are Charleston scenes, but they do look like it, I love them either way.
