Merry February, Y'all!
Flipped the page on our John Sloane calendar to this wintry scene| John Sloane |
And here's tonight's big bright full Snow Moon:
We hardly ever see snow here, so when it started falling Saturday, we bundled up and headed to the trails to enjoy it!
There goes Barn Kitty Callie, leading the way, as always.
I was loving the pretty snow dusted scenes:My camera really didn't capture them, but the clusters of individual snowflakes were so beautiful
The fairies were safely inside their little houses, keeping WARM.
I had so many layers on, LOL, so I stayed warm. I was so excited to see pretty snow I wasn't paying attention to the cold anyway.
I told Mr. Front Porch later on, I was SO THANKFUL for all my new "long johns" I'd bought a couple of weeks ago. That's what we called them all my life, long johns. When I went shopping for new ones, there is nothing like that listed anywhere, ha ha LOL. It's now called "warm wear", or "thermal wear". I know my grandparents called them long johns as well, I also heard them say "long handles", I think.
Our Camellia bush finally bloomed, I've been waiting for weeks. They are frosted with snow and so pretty! We plan to add two more this Spring, now that we have figured out where they will grow. We lost both Azalea bushes we planted 2 springs ago, we may try them again, in a different location.
Our ladies were all fluffed up and running around in the swirling snow, and then they discovered they could EAT IT, so they did, and they sure enjoyed it!
Even with these cold temperatures, we know spring will come. Our fig tree has buds
and there's lots of greenery in spots:
Good to come inside and I have some new magazines to read on these cold nights:
We didn't lose power and are so thankful for that. I hope you didn't either, if you were in this storm. The wind blew and rattled the house all night but nothing too scary. LOL. Church was canceled and we had a quiet day at home. I made a roast with taters/onions/carrots in the crock pot---my favorite Sunday supper.
| just a skiff of snow, so far |

At this point, we really didn't know how bad the storm would be, (they were forecasting a "bomb cyclone with hurricane force winds"!!) or if we might lose power, so we spent the day preparing, just in case. Charging everything, gathering lamps/lanterns, batteries, water, Mr. Front Porch had made an early morning market run and got our icebox stocked up, we gathered all the eggs, moved firewood, I washed all our clothes and extra blankets just in case we needed them, filled the bird feeders, got the mail before it got slick, made lots of back-up coffee and put into thermoses, took care of the chickens/guinea and all the other necessary things.
We went out again later and the snow was coming down hard! furiously swirling about

This little guy has been visiting us each evening.
He's very feral and looks rough. I feel bad for him out in the cold, but I think he sleeps in the barn. We made him a covered shelter in case he needs it and yes, I FEED HIM. I'm not going to let any animals go hungry around here, especially in this cold.
When it gets down to the 30s, we bring Callie in at night, she loves it.

Oh, I am SO happy you posted this with so many lovely photos of the snow & you & Callie& even the stray kitty who is thankful for your kindness, I'm sure! You really did get a nice amount of snow! So very pretty on everything. You did just what I would've done...got out and walked in it and enjoyed it while it lasted! It doesn't stay around long in the south! I wish we could've had some snow or at least some rain! The ground is so dry and those fires are still burning. Now we can smell the smoke here and it's really bad.
ReplyDeleteYou look beautiful in your outdoor outfits in the snow! Just perfect!!! Your roast dinner sounds so good and I can almost smell it cooking! Thank you for sharing the beauty from your lovely yard and woods with us. Oh, those poor "snow angels" look cold...they need a blanket or sweater! LOL. Your camelias are so pretty, especially in the snow!! The snow helped keep them all from freezing.
Enjoy your day. This was a great way to start my day!!!
I've just had the most wonderful stroll through the snow with a Dear Friend. As the sweet dying Preacher said in Deadwood (or thereabouts on the eloquence, but Ray McKinnon's voice resounds in its pure enjoyment): "What could be more Felicity than an evening walk with friends?" And the remembrance will linger---I'll come back to these pictures again and again, I 'spect, because it's ME three decades ago, right about NOW, in my never-seen-snow enthusiasm for getting out in it in the first Winter we moved here.
ReplyDeleteI'm that black coat on the trail (we lived just blocks from what became an enormous State Park and still is, and we still do, just closer) with the snowflakes in my hair. I HATED that Chris had to get out in it and scrape off the car, drive around in it, chance a skitter or a slid every day for months, but MY HATING snow wouldn't have changed that, so I just unabashedly LOVED it and still do.
Such a perfect day, of cold and nippy toes and rosy nose and warm comfortables to come home to. You've described the perfection of a Day in the Life that all those glossy magazines attain to, and conveyed every crisp step and breath. Scents and sounds and all the comforts of home at the end of such a journey are the cherries in the snow. I'll remember this post even more than most, because it's been in my imagination and now my reality, all my life.
Merry February to YOU TOO!!!
PS They ARE Long Handles---etiology unknown, and at our house, they're Ganner Pants---our first granddaughter Gracie called them that for the pale tan long johns her Ganner wore from October to Spring---they were his house wardrobe all the time. She even called her ballet tights that.
i love the snow...there is nothing better than a walk while it is coming down. i watched that snow moon from inside the house, it was bitter cold outside. i enjoyed all your pictures of the snow, they are pretty and very creative. i have drawn many a heart in the snow, we write our names too!! we were in the path of the storm, it went "fairly" easy on us. we've been ok, and we never lost power!! we did lose our snowblower, it was no match for the ice!!
ReplyDeleteI love all the pictures and you have some real snow Angels. Callie looks to be very happy out in the snow. Glad you never lost power. I hate when we lose power which isn't often thank goodness
