Weeki Wachee Mermaids

The world famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids traveled from their beautiful clear spring in Florida to come visit us here at our Charleston Aquarium, this spring. They come every year, and we never miss them.

You can tell by the looks of enchantment on the little children's faces how mesmerizing the pretty and friendly mermaids are!

The jellyfish............awwwwwwwwwww, the jellyfish! They are some of the most intricate, delicate, amazing, and strange creatures ever! I could watch them for hours! I've also been stung several times, so I can tell you how painful these things are!

The Mountain Forest area has beautiful waterfalls and playful otters---they are fun to watch!

In the Saltmarsh Aviary section, lots of birds were up close and being fed--you can get lots of pictures.

Back in the Mountain Forest area---enjoying my moment with the regal and brave Eagle. Isn't she GORGEOUS? I think her name is "Liberty", but not sure.

In the Coast section I saw seahorses---they are so cute!

In the Coastal Plain area we saw snakes and alligators.

This is the Great Ocean Tank. I think it's about 50 feet deep and has SO MANY gorgeous fish, sharks, turtles and all kinds of things to watch.

It was a hot day!---I was thrilled to see that they served THESE!! I drank TWO OF THESE that afternoon! (the aquarium is enclosed and air conditioned except for small habitats you go outside for, I got hot there)
Coke Icee........yum!
The gift shop has lots of fun things!
Rocks

globes

pretty bracelets

and mermaid dolls.....of course!
The Charleston Aquarium is one of our favorite places to go. They have a good variety of different exhibits and special events all year.
If you go----
It is two levels, and there are escalators and  elevators. The aquarium is located at 100 Aquarium Way in Charleston. The snack bar is really nice with a good variety and plenty of seating around it. The restrooms are always clean. The employees and volunteers are knowledgeable and helpful and very friendly. They are open every day 9-5 I believe. They are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Exhibits end at 4 p.m. and the building closes at five p.m.
There is a big parking garage across the street--(sorry I don't know the rates, we usually park in the neighborhood.I wouldn't recommend this unless you know the rules/tow away zones in Charleston.)
Tickets--Adults are $24.95
Children 3 to age 12 are $17.95
Members are free. I highly recommend becoming members! Not only does it get you unlimited admission for the year and other special privileges--but also discounts at the snack bar and in the gift shop!
The photographers take very very nice portraits you may purchase and they make a nice memento of your visit. There are many nice portrait packages you can pick from in different price ranges and you can take them home with you that day. We always purchase them---they are too nice to leave behind!
The phone number to the Aquarium is (843) 577-3474.
The Aquarium website is:

  3. I feel like I just visited the aquarium with you! My daughter was a synchronized swimmer and one summer in college she worked at Aquarena Springs as a mermaid. One of her swimmates was in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.......she was a mermaid!
Loved every one of your photos!

  4. How do the mermaids breathe under the water? I've never seen a mermaid show before so I'm clueless. I would LOVE to see one though--maybe WHEN (not if) I come to visit you someday. I could time my visit when the Mermaids visit S.C.. :-D Thanks for sharing all these pics. Aquariums are so enjoyable and RELAXING. We have lots of bald eagles here in Western WA. They are such majestic and fascinating birds! You have me craving and ICEE! We used to drink those and 7-11 Slurpies when we were growing up! Loved them! It's been a HOT & DRY summer for us. I'd appreciate it more if we had air conditioning in our house. But we DON'T. UGH! Thankfully, we DO have an air conditioning unit in our room so that we can sleep at night! PTL!!! Love you SWEET Debbigem!!! XOXO
