Lemon Time

Recently it finally got chilly enough for the lemons to turn yellow and be picked!

  1. I am surprised that it is the cold that ripens lemons. With this very cold winter hitting the south also, how do you protect those trees?

    1. I am not sure, that is what someone told me. LOl the trees are not ours, but I would sure love to grow one someday, I think they are so pretty! With the cold that was here recently, we all cover our flowers and plants with covers, anything works really, tablecloths, old sheets, last week we saw a huge assortment of "covers" on all the windowboxes, ha ha LOL I didn't look if anyone covered their lemon trees, that is a good question! I will ask if I catch those people out.

    2. I asked my 16 yr old granddaughter what she does with her lemon tree that she started when she was a little girl. She brings her’s in as the winters can be very cold in PA. However, we are having mid 60’s temps right now that are expected to change to bone chilling by tomorrow night.

  2. Crazy. The only thing growing here is icicles! LOL When life gives you lemons make lemonade...or in my case---lemon pie! lol I wonder if most people know that citrus fruit does NOT continue to ripen once it is picked? That is why timing is so critical in the FL orange groves. xo Diana

    1. Hi Diana, I didn't know that. Do you know if limes are the same?? I think both lemon and lime trees are so pretty!

  7. Debbi, I'd give anything to be able to have my own lemon tree. It would never make it in our climate unless one had an indoor solarium and wonderful light, neither of which I have! I'm just the slightest bit envious!
